A Landscaper's Guide to Artificial Grass

If that patch of brown in your backyard needs attention or piques your interest in a DIY project, consider installing artificial grass, also referred to as turf. “For those looking to have a well-manicured lawn all year long with little maintenance, turf is a great choice,” says Cynthia Castillo, Stock Carpeting Merchant at the Home Depot. “Maintenance is very easy with artificial turf: you can use a blower to clear leaves and occasionally rinse with water to knock down dust, but usually, rainfall will be enough to keep your turf clean.”

If you have a small, shaded courtyard or backyard, consider artificial turf as most species of real grass do not thrive in shade,” also advises Stephen McFarlane, Regional Landscape Manager, Sandals Resorts International. Depending on the location of your space; climate; as well as preference for a low maintenance landscape, here is a guide on choosing and determining if artificial grass is right for you:

When should you use artificial grass at home?

“I recommend artificial grass for low maintenance: once installed, turf requires very little care,” advises Castillo. Some of the other benefits of artificial grass includes no mowing, where lawnmowers make up five percent of the country’s air pollution; saving water; artificial grass is easy to keep clean; and it remains green year-round.

Have a pet that you’d like to let out into your backyard without worry? “I highly recommend Lifeproof with Petproof Technology Premium Pet Turf, which is made with high-performance yarn to look and feel just like real grass with a reduction in maintenance, even under heavy use,” says Castillo. This artificial grass includes “ultra-flo” backing, which provides durable backing against dogs digging and drains two times faster than the industry average, so liquid waste passes and will not puddle.

What is the process usually like for new installation?

Installing artificial turf yourself can be a fun and simple DIY project to tackle this summer. “Your first step would be to measure the length of your yard, and multiply that by its width which will tell you how much grass you need,” advises Castillo. The other steps include removing existing grass and soil; installing bender boards; base materials; and weed barrier cloth for larger installs and weed prone areas. When you are read to install the artificial grass, the process includes cutting the turf to shape; installing nails along the edges and seams along with landscaping staples. Don’t forget to broom in infill, which are products placed in between the synthetic grass blades to help them stand up.

How do you decide which artificial turf is best for you?

Consider the application of your turf: will it be installed in an area where lots of pets and kids play, a front yard with low traffic, or a back yard with high traffic? “A turf with “ultra-flo” backing and high-performance yarn is designed for dimensional stability, easy drainage, and heavy traffic from pets and kids,” says Castillo. “Second, determine what turf looks the most realistic and natural to you: pile height and blade design are important to the natural, realistic look of turf. While turf is designed to last for years of use, I recommend selecting a turf that comes with a longer warranty, at least 8 years, to ensure coverage throughout the life of your artificial grass.”

When is it best to use real grass?

Depending on your lifestyle, location, and ability to maintain your lawn, real grass may be a better fit. “Consider who will be using the space – if children are going to be the biggest users of the space, you’ll likely want to consider real grass because artificial turf can produce surface temperatures that are near asphalt pavement in warm climates,” advises McFarlane. “Real grass is perfect for those who have an adequate water resource to maintain the grass and who don’t mind mowing it once in a while,” says McFarlane. The best person to consult to install either real or artificial grass is a reputable, certified landscape contractor or specialized sod installation contractor.

How Long Should Your Warm-Ups Really Last?

Creaky joints and achy muscles can result in pain if you don't properly prepare for a tough workout. Before hitting the weights or heading out for a long run, start with a good warm-up.

"The ideal way to warm up depends on what activity you are doing, and in many cases, you want to do something identical to the activity that follows, just at a lower intensity," says Jeyco Estaba, regional fitness manager at Mexico's Blue Diamond Resorts. "For instance, if you're running or cycling, this might mean starting with a slow jog or easy spin."

Alternatively, you can do an activity that's different from the exercise you're about to start, like jumping rope before a weight-training session. The important thing is to get your heart beating faster to get blood flowing to the muscles you'll be using during your workout.

But every workout — and every warm-up — is different. Here's how to figure out the best way to prep your body for your next sweat session.

Tip

“A good warm-up should last from 5 to 10 minutes and work all major muscle groups,” Estaba says. “However, if you're feeling cold or achy, have been siting or immobile for most of the day, you can extend it to 15 minutes or more.”

How Long Should a Warm-Up Last?

Warm-ups are an essential part of your workout. If you jump to quickly into a full workout without warming up, you risk pulled muscles and weakened performance. Warming up pumps nutrient-rich, oxygenated blood to your muscles and speeds up your heart rate and breathing.

"A good warm-up should last from 5 to 10 minutes and work all major muscle groups," Estaba says. "However, if you're feeling cold or achy, have been siting or immobile for most of the day, you can extend it to 15 minutes or more."

Also consider the readiness of your body when determining the length of your warm-up.

"For example, if it's early in the morning you may want to do a longer warm-up (around 5 to 10 minutes), but if it's the afternoon and you've already been up and moving, the warm-up would be a little bit shorter, maybe 3 to 5 minutes," says Clarence Hairston, CPT, coach for Tempo.

"It just depends on how your body is feeling and how vigorous the activity is that you're going to be doing leading up to the work-out."

How Long Should I Warm Up Before Lifting Weights?

Adding extra weight to your body weight can cause damage in the long term if you're not prepared for it. Estaba recommends 5, 10 or 15 minutes as an effective time to warm up before lifting.

If you're attempting to hit a PR (personal record), you can do a longer warm up to ensure your muscles are properly prepared. However, if you have a lighter lifting day, a shorter warm-up will suffice.

How Long Should I Warm Up Before Running?

An effective running warm-up should raise your core body temperature. "This is especially important if you're heading into a workout in wintertime," Estaba says. Here are some options, depending on the kind of run you have planned:

  • Easy runs: Walk or jog easily and gradually speed up for 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Long runs: Jog at an easy pace for up to 10 minutes.

  • Speed workouts: Jog for up to 20 minutes and follow with dynamic stretching, such as high knees or butt kicks.

How Long Should I Warm Up Before a HIIT Workout?

HIIT is all about working out as hard as you can before resting up for the next round, so your warm up ease you into high intensity so you can train hard without injuring yourself. "Because HIIT is usually very intense, making sure you warm up before your workout is critically important," Estaba says.

Here's a HIIT cardio warm-up you can do before your session that should take no more than 10 minutes:

  • 10 hip rotations/side

  • 6 5-second thoracic reach throughs

  • 3 5-second cat-cows

  • 30 high knees (each leg)

  • 10 squats

  • 10 walkouts

  • 20 glute bridge

  • 30 high knees (each leg)

  • 10 squats

  • 10 walkouts

  • 20 glute bridge

What Are the Stages of a Warm-Up?

For best results, start your warm-up slowly, then pick up the pace to ease your body into movement. Then aim to hit each of the four stages of a good warm-up.

"An effective 10-minute warm-up usually comprises four steps: loosening joints (circular motion movements, rotations), stretching muscles (can be dynamic or static stretching), pumping the heart (like jumping jacks or burpees) and practice movements (like squats or lunges in case of a leg day workout)," Estaba says.

What's the Best Warm-Up Before a Workout?

The best 10-minute warm up before a workout is a combination of stretching and activation of the muscles that you're going to be working.

"For instance, if I'm going to be doing a chest workout, I'd like to stretch the pectoral muscles and then also do some chest activation work," Estaba says. He also likes light cardio, jogging, a jump rope or jumping jacks to get the heart rate going and prepared for a longer workout.

Try This 10-Minute Full-Body Warm-Up

Here's Estaba's go-to 10-minute warm-up. You can also add some foam-rolling beforehand to release any existing tension or soreness in the muscles.

  • 8 head movements up/down

  • 8 head movements side to side

  • 5 head rotations each side

  • 8 forward arm circles, 8 backward arm circles

  • 8 inward hip rotations, 8 outward hip rotations (each side)

  • 2 minutes of jumping rope

  • 8 walkouts

  • 12 deep reverse lunge to knee raise (each side)

  • 15 squats with a 10-rep pulse at the end

The 7 Trees You Should Never Plant in Your Yard, According to Real Estate Pros

If you’re thinking of selling your house one day, or maybe you want to liven up your yard by planting a new tree, there are important things to consider before breaking out the shovel. Certain trees come with labor-intensive maintenance, for example, or might inadvertently have you planting invasive species and incurring damage to your property.

“At my first home, there was this massive and beautiful Ginkgo tree that shaded my driveway,” says David Steckel, home expert at Thumbtack. “That tree produced these little orange fruits that would all drop in the span of a week in the fall. If I did not clean them up immediately, they would stain my masonry or worse, my car. If the cold weather came early, it would harden the pulp and that mess would be stuck to my car for the entire winter.”

Steckel advises not planting trees within 10 feet of your home if possible, since some trees have invasive root systems that tend to grow laterally and aggressively like Willows, American Elms, and Silver Maples. These root systems are hydrophilic (water-loving, in other words) and in their search for moisture can invade drains, sewer systems, and lift driveways and sidewalks.

“Another reason to make sure your trees aren’t too close to your home is in case of a fire or drought-prone areas. Some trees like Italian Cypress or Eucalyptus are considered highly flammable,” Steckel says.

When deciding on what kind of tree to plant, it’s worth doing a little research on what kinds to avoid, since one wrong move may deter potential buyers down the road once the tree matures. From Female Ginkgo to Cottonwood trees, here are seven trees homeowners should steer clear of planting.

Red Oak

A beautiful but annoying tree when it comes to maintenance, the Red Oak produces hard-to-clean leaves and acorns. “The tree also produces these little flowers called catkins that when they fall, they’re also quite difficult to clean up,” warns Steckel.

Silver Maple

The Silver Maple is a fast-growing shade tree with a shallow root system that can cause turf and concrete issues. “It’s popular with homeowners and contractors who are looking for a fast shade solution in a new development, but it has terribly weak wood due to its fast growth,” says Brian Parker, senior live goods merchant at The Home Depot. “It also doesn’t sustain wind and snow damage well.”

Mulberry

Mulberry trees are known to be messy because their fruit stains just about everything — like your driveway, walkway, porch, or patio. “In addition to the fruit attracting dozens of birds, the Mulberry’s aggressive roots are large and shallow, and routinely cause damage to irrigation systems and house foundations, cracking pavement and upending landscaping,” Parker says.

Cottonwood

A Cottonwood tree’s rapid growth leads to a weak wood structure, making it susceptible to limb breakage and damage from storms and wind. “Cottonwood trees are not hardy enough to withstand years of exposure to the elements,” advises Parker. “The trees release fluffy, cotton-like seeds in late spring or early summer that stick to just about anything, and they also continually drop leaves and sticks.”

Female Ginkgo

Parker advises against planting a female ginkgo or “maidenhair tree” in your yard because it will bear small round fruits that are not only slippery and fleshy but emit a very foul odor. However, male Ginkgos are a hardy, easy-care type of tree to have in your yard. “It’s a large shade tree with a very long life due to its resistance to disease and insects, so if you buy a Ginkgo, it’s critical to get the correct sex,” Parker says.

Bradford Pear

The Bradford Pear is infamously known for its weak branches that can easily break off in severe weather. Parker notes that its flowers smell unappealingly fishy while also being highly invasive, as its thorny seedlings crowd out native plants.

Sweet Gum

Sweet Gum seed pods or “gumballs” fall in autumn and winter and are very difficult to rake up. “These seed pods have a round, sharp and spiky exterior and the tree’s surface roots can also create issues across the lawn,” Parker says.

How to Create Your Own Drive-In Movie Theater at Home

Hosting a movie night for family and friends can be made all the more immersive with a drive-in theater experience. For that, an outdoor shed or garage can be converted into a drive-in theater fairly easily. "All you really need to get going is a projector, speaker, screen, and extension cord, and you're ready to host awesome movie nights at home," says Thumbtack home expert David Steckel. "You can mount the projector in the ceiling and install surround sound speakers, sound baffles on the ceilings and walls, and put down a beautiful epoxy coating on the floor to give it a higher-end look and feel."

Feeling inspired? Here are four steps to building your dream drive-in movie theater.

Set up the screen.

For power, install an electrical outlet to reach the ceiling mounted projector and for media devices in the back corner of the garage (if using one). In addition, install a retractable movie screen ($299, potterybarn.com) at the back of the garage to allow the screen to be out of the way while cars are parked.

ADVERTISING

Install surround sound.

"I recommend a home theater receiver with 5.1 Surround Sound, which will need to be protected in a media cabinet suitable for outdoor use," advises Amanda Tharp, product manager at ShelterLogic, a company specializing in outdoor shade, shelter, and lifestyle products. "All speakers should be small to medium sized and mountable as you don't want speakers on the ground for when cars are parked."

Streaming is key.

Sharp also recommends you include a streaming device for movies such as Apple TV or Roku device for wireless streaming content. You can also use a PlayStation 5 or Xbox, which are perfect for playing Blu-ray movies and gaming on the big screen.

Consider the light and sound requirements.

Consider sound insulating panels for the walls of your garage or shed as your biggest challenge will be the sound bouncing off of the metal walls. "Sound absorbing panels will help cut down on reverberation and echoes," says Tharp. "So that you don't trip or bump into your newly transformed space, install LED light strips ($29.99, target.com) along the bottom of the walls for safety as well as LED lights for the ceiling for general lighting."

And if you don't know where to start? "We have a lot of audio-visual experts on the Thumbtack platform that can help you purchase, supply, and install not just a movie screen, but the projector, cables, speakers and anything else you'd need to make your backyard a movie oasis," adds Steckel.

10 Incredible Waterfall Hikes Around the U.S.

Jump in for a cool swim, take in the misty views, or just soak up the surroundings.

There’s something about arriving at a cascading waterfall at the end of (or partway through) a rigorous hike that is truly gratifying. The possibilities are tantalizing—jump in for a cool swim, head through or under the falling water, enjoy lunch on a nearby rock, or simply take in the surrounding flora and fauna to the soothing soundtrack of flowing water. No matter your fitness and experience level, there are easy to advanced hikes waiting for you in domestic destinations as diverse as Hawai‘i’s O‘ahu island, Malibu in California, Alaska, and central Oregon.

Around the United States, many waterfalls become active or stronger when the snow melts in the spring and summer. Hiking in the spring is cooler, but if you’re into seeing the leaves change, it’s worth planning a fall hike to some of these destinations. In Alaska, most of the waterfalls freeze in winter, creating opportunities for ice climbing, while in Southern California, you can hike to waterfalls year round.

Whenever you decide to go, grab your gear and hiking boots and set out for one of these 10 great waterfall hikes throughout the U.S.

5. Horsetail Falls and Bridal Veil Falls

Valdez, Alaska

Distance: 5.2 miles round trip

Difficulty: Moderate

If you’re a fan of beautiful snowy winterscapes, then Valdez, Alaska, should be on your list. Perhaps just as impressive is witnessing the melting snow in the spring and summer create flowing water through two of Valdez’s most noteworthy waterfalls, Horsetail Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Both waterfalls are accessible via the Keystone Canyon Pack Trail, and the trail difficulty is moderate at 2.6 miles each way with an elevation gain of 250 feet. Emergency Survival Gear to Bring on Every Hike or Camping Trip

Getting your blood pumping while hikingcamping, and engaging in outdoor activities in remote locations can be thrilling, life-changing, and, depending on the environment, not for the faint of heart. It can also be dangerous if you're traveling on unfamiliar paths. In order to successfully and safely complete an off-the-grid retreat, key safety precautions and equipment need to be in place.

“For backcountry trips, I take a survival kit with me that includes fire-starting supplies, food, water, cooking equipment, a flashlight, and a radio, as well as a satellite tracker and messaging device,” says Mark Fleenor, helicopter pilot, backpacking enthusiast, and owner of Sheep Mountain Lodge in Glacier View, Alaska. “For winter trips, we take sleeping bags and extra fire-starting equipment.”

Fleenor says the biggest consideration for backcountry trips—and really any outdoor adventure where you may find yourself off the grid, be it hiking in Appalachia, testing out van life in Sedona, or pitching a tent on a secluded beach in Hawaii—is checking the weather and making sure you have enough supplies for an extended stay, should things go awry.

If you’re setting out on your first backcountry trip or just want to beef up your outdoor emergency gear tool kit for summertime excursions, Fleenor suggests you add at least one of these seven essentials to your packing list, from a satellite messenger and sleeping bag to a headlamp with an impressively long battery life.

What to Look for in an Outdoor Ceiling Fan

Damp Rating

Make sure you confirm that your lamp is either damp or wet rated. A wet rated ceiling fan is one that has a high capacity to withstand rain and humidity, while a damp rated fan can handle some wetness but should be more protected. Wet rated fans are a bit trickier to find, but in most cases a damp rated fan should be fine for most climates. Be careful that all parts of the fan are either wet or damp rated—some fans have wet rated blades but damp rated motors, so should still be protected.

Control Mechanism

Pull chain-activated outdoor ceiling fans are still being made today, but the more popular options are either wall-controlled, remote-controlled, or both. Remote-controlled outdoor ceiling fans sometimes have Smart Home compatibility, which will make them much more expensive but easier to control. Consider your lifestyle and also the number of ceiling fans in your space—if you have two outdoor fans, you'll need to be sure you can control both of them with ease.

Size

The average outdoor ceiling fan has a blade span between 50-54 inches, which is suitable for spaces between 250-400 square feet. If you have a large patio or veranda, you'll need something much bigger, like 70-90 inches. Larger ceiling fans are typically more expensive and there are fewer models to choose from, but you'll be much happier in the long run.

7 Indoor Hanging Plants That Purify the Air and Add So Much Dimension

You can add more greenery to your home in more ways than just putting a plant on the windowsill or in an empty corner. To truly turn your space into an oasis, consider hanging plants from your ceiling or walls—this approach provides oxygen as well and adds an unexpected touch of dimension. "When choosing hanging plants, ensure you have a strong enough beam or structure to hang from first and foremost," advises Stephen McFarlane, Regional Landscape Manager, Sandals Resorts International. "This location should be in an area that receives adequate indirect light," McFarlane adds. "And throughout the year, turn the basket regularly to ensure even growth. Using a soilless mix that contains perlite for your hanging baskets will keep the basket lighter and will improve drainage also. Check soil moisture regularly, water when the top inch of the mix is dry, and fertilize with a balanced slow-release fertilizer every two to three months," he advises. Ready to take on hanging plant parent status? Ahead, discover seven indoor hanging plants that'll add some peaceful green drama to your living space.

Spider Plant

National Plant Networkhomedepot.com$41.47

If you're looking for a wispy oxygen-providing plant, meet the Spider Plant. One of the best air purifying plants, this Southern Africa native features spiky lime green and yellow variegated foliage. The bright and beautiful house plant looks beautiful next to shelving or with a downward hanging trellis. "The Spider plant prefers bright indirect light, but avoid direct sunlight as it may scorch the leaves," says McFarlane. “Keep the plant slightly moist and water it when the top inch of soil becomes dry, as overwatering will lead to root rot. Fertilizing every three to four months with a balanced fertilizer should be sufficient.”

Devil's Ivy

Popularly known as "Golden Pothos," the Devil’s Ivy plant is another one of those easy-growing indoor plants. It is stunning to witness how the leaves and vines on this plant will start to either drop down and spread out of its hanging basket or climb beautifully along your walls. All you need is a low to moderate window light, and “Pothos likes to have its soil drier between waterings, but be careful not to under-water, so watch the leaves for signs of drought stress, like browning, scorched margins," says McFarlane. "Fertilizer should be a balanced granular like 14-14-14 osmocote every three months," he adds.

The Best Indoor Plants With Large, Lush Leaves

That lonely corner in your house? It's begging for a good, big leaf houseplant to perk things up and transform the area into an oxygen-providing oasis. But first and foremost, when choosing houseplants, especially big-leafed plants, "ensure you have the space for the plant and enough room to closely monitor," advises Stephen McFarlane, Regional Landscape Manager, Sandals Resorts International. “A good percentage of these plants will do well in bright, indirect light, and if you have a room with south-, east- or west-facing windows, you are in luck. The plant should be situated near but not in front of the window to prevent scorched leaves, and rotating the plant "a quarter turn weekly will ensure all sides receive adequate light,” Macfarlane continues. Discover are eight big leaf plants that you should consider to green up your living space.

1Fiddle Leaf Fig

2Lady Palm

The lady palm is an elegant, slow-growing palm well adapted to indoor growing that also happens to help with purifying and filtering the air. "Lady Palms prefer bright, indirect light, as too much unfiltered sun can cause leaf burn," says McFarlane.  "Because lady palms are slow-growing, it is important to check moisture levels prior to watering; water only when the top two inches of the soil are dry."

The Best Inflatable Kayaks That Offer Stability and Portability

What better way to explore your waterways than with an inflatable kayak? Utilizing a speedy setup and breakdown is a key feature when you’re traveling on a road trip or have limited storage space in your home. Inflatable kayaks come in different materials, from vinyl to 18-gauge PVC construction, and can be used in whitewater rafting, fishing, touring, and for recreational purposes. Depending on the kayak, you will find models that have key features, like adjustable back support, aluminum framing, and more. If weight is a concern, look for lightweight construction and easy compact features.

What to Consider

Depend on your activity of choice, it's important to think about the shape and size of the kayak to best suit your needs. For example, if you're looking for a kayak to fish, you'll probably want one that's wider and offers more stability. If you're looking to go whitewater rafting, you'll want something that's more durable and made for rapids. Naturally, a slimmer and longer model will move more quickly through the water than a wider pick.

Another element of inflatable kayaks to consider is the amount of time it will take to dry out your kayak after a trip on the water. The kayak's material plays a big part in this. Stay away from kayaks that have a fabric coating on the outside that encloses the inner material with a zipper. Water will seep through the fabric between the layers and might not fully dry—even after months of air drying.

How We Chose

Our list of the best inflatable kayaks includes a mixture of budget and higher end options. We surveyed the market and considered reviews from verified customers from sites like Amazon and REI, where important features like weight, size, features, and construction were discussed. In order to narrow the list down to a selection of six products, we consulted a variety of experts, from outdoor bloggers to long-time kayaking hobbyists. Here are the inflatable kayaks that we recommend, from hardcore whitewater rafting options to calm, lake kayaking picks.

This is what it’s like to scuba dive during the pandemic

Before taking that giant stride into the beautiful depths of the ocean below, scuba divers propose questions like, “Do I have enough air in my tank?” and “Is my breathing equipment working correctly?” as a part of their five-point predive buddy checklist — an accident prevention measure both novice and veteran divers are encouraged to take for each dive.

Who knew that divers would be hit with adjusting to even more health and safety precautions beyond the normal equipment set up with the arrival of COVID-19?

If you haven’t dived since the pandemic began, it is expected that you’ll have some concerns: how crowded the boat is; seating arrangements for post and prediving; and eating snacks prepared by others. Plus, deciding about gear: renting gear is an efficient way for travelers to keep their luggage light, but bringing your own equipment to a dive means that you are responsible for your gear and there is no need for anyone else to touch it.

Not to worry: you are not alone, and everyone from dive operators to instructors to avid divers are adjusting to enhanced sanitation and prevention measures against virus infection while diving.

“Scuba diving offers a unique opportunity for people to experience new adventures utilizing the ultimate form of social distancing: you’re literally using a Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA)”, Kristin Valette-Wirth, Chief Brand and Membership Officer for PADI (a leading dive organization with over 6,000 dive centers around the world) tells TPG. “So, scuba diving by definition is an activity not to avoid.”

What safety precautions are Caribbean dive operators taking?

Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts runs the largest PADI-certification program in the Caribbean; more than 100,000 divers having gone through the program. With this amount of diver volume, the resort group has implemented specific sanitation protocols.

“As part of our Platinum Protocols of Cleanliness, all dive equipment is put through rigorous cleaning procedures, including frequent sanitization of the dive pool decks as well as dive apparel before and after each use,” Michael Clarke, Sandals Resorts International Group Watersports and Marine Division Director tells TPG.

I experienced several dives during the pandemic and even reached my 60th dive achievement this February at Sandals South Coast in Jamaica. This experience in particular made me feel safe once I saw most people were wearing masks and socially distancing as much as possible on the 49-foot dive vessel. The fact that there is a lot of healthy ventilation from being in the open air made the experience seem safer than being in any type of indoor social setting. I also ate a light breakfast so I did not partake in the complimentary snacks on board.

Some of the dive sites that I visited in Jamaica were only a five to 10-minute boat ride away from shore, including English Reef, Palm Tree, and the Sandals House Reef, which were teeming with spotted crab, lobster, stingrays, moray eels, and the invasive lionfish. I recommend keeping diving activities as close to shore as possible so you don’t have to spend long periods of time on the boat with others.

Thinking of getting vaccinated? This can provide some assurance against the battle of infections. “All of our staff are fully vaccinated, as are other dive operators I know, and guests must all be COVID negative within five days of arrival on island, so we are all pretty confident that disease spread is less likely on dive charters than some other activities,” says Clare Jardine, co-owner of Dive Provo located on the island of Turks & Caicos.

Scuba diving instructors are also adjusting to the new COVID-19 norms. According to Elijah Jean-Baptiste, who is based in Barbados and a Master Instructor (the second-highest certification in diving), “We are now encouraging instructors and students to keep their face masks on during training in the pool. On the dive boats, each guest has their own bucket for their mask and regulator.”

What’s it like to dive in Mexico right now?

Diving in Cancun is a must-do, as there are the surreal, water-flooded cenotes, shark action and even an underwater museum.

For American expat and financial coach, Nick D’Urso who is based in Cancun, diving in Mexico diving during the pandemic has been taken seriously. “On the boat, it’s important to wear your masks out of the water since most people have traveled here for vacation,” says D’Urso. “The fear of getting COVID-19 seems to have worn off as COVID-19 is now the ‘norm’ around the world. In my experience, it’s mainly about being responsible for those who spend time with older people back home after diving. There’s a responsibility we should all be taking to be safe.”

Underwater photographers are also adjusting to the impact COVID-19 has had on their profession.

“We were lucky that we were only out of the water three months before the cenotes re-opened” says Tom St. George, an award-winning underwater photographer based in Mexico. “It’s good to see sensible precautions in place such as taking people’s temperature at cenote dive site entrances and requiring masks to be worn. The biggest change during scuba courses is that any skills requiring sharing a regulator are now simulated so you don’t put someone else’s regulator in your mouth. We are also seeing more teaching be done out in the fresh air, which is much nicer than being in a stuffy classroom.”

I visited Los Cabos last November amid the pandemic and went diving with Dive Ninja Expeditions, a local tour operator. I felt safe diving with this company as everyone wore masks and our dives took place at the Pelican Rock and Lands End dive sites, only a five-minute boat ride from shore. Even with the expedition taking so close to shore, there was still lots to see, including schools of swarming sardines. If you’re thinking of visiting Los Cabos and taking a dive tour, the Dive Ninja Expeditions keeps their website updated with COVID-19 protocols.

Bottom line

If you are traveling to a points hotel or resort this year, check with the property to see if they can recommend a local dive operator that is implementing sanitation and mask-wearing standards. As scuba diving takes place in the open air and underwater, if you are able to keep a distance from others on the dive boat and wear masks as much as possible before getting in the water, these precautions will help to prevent COVID-19 infections.

What to Look For in a Wall Mirror

Shape

Wall mirrors come in practically every shape, although the most common varieties are rectangular and round. If you're looking for something different, do a little digging and you'll find various shapes, including sunburst, oval, square, blob, and even heart. Choosing the best shape depends on the size of your room and the type of impact you're trying to make.

Material

Mirrors come in an array of different finishes, including wood, aluminum, glass, bronze, rattan, and copper. Depending on your style, you might choose a bronze or wood frame for a room with mid-century touches, while a lucite or gold frame might fit better in a more contemporary space. There has been a recent resurgence in boho-inspired rattan mirrors, so if you're looking for something trendy you might want to start there.

Weight

When choosing where to hang your mirror, weight should be the ultimate concern. If you have a few small weighted mirrors, you can put a small nail, or use glue like mirror mastic. If you are hanging a larger mirror, you might want to consult a contractor to help you locate the studs in your walls, as heavy mirrors might rip out of drywall. Most jobs can be done on your own in under 20 minutes, but don't hesitate to hire a professional if you feel uncomfortable.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Adrienne Jordan writes about home decor for The Spruce. She considers herself a lover of mirrors, from thrifted floor mirrors to more elegant purchases like the Sunburst Accent Mirror featured above. She believes that mirrors are key for adding a touch of wow to your space.

If You’re a Stomach Sleeper, These Are the Best Pillows For You

Everyone has a different sleeping style, and one of the common positions is sleeping on your stomach. And some pillows accommodate specific positions better than others, so finding the right one could be the key to a much better night's sleep. The Best Crampons and Microspikes for Winter Adventures

That feeling of having your feet slip out from under you when you hit an icy or snowy situation? That's where crampons come in to work with your shoes to provide traction for winter adventures. You will find crampon models that range from the everyday wear to the technically inclined, and that come in a variety of materials like aluminum or steel. With the right pair of crampons, you will be able to trek through snowstorms without accumulating clumps of snow beneath your boots, or even effectively climb an icy mountain or glacier. To stay secured on your shoe, crampons are designed with either Velcro straps or a rubber harness that encompasses your shoe.

What to Consider

Crampons are a necessity when you are traversing icy and snowy terrain. They'll help you trek with ease, as well as take part in more intense physical activities like crossing glaciers, mountaineering, or even climbing frozen waterfalls. Crampon frames come in steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, and each material is designed for a different activity. Aluminum crampons are the lightest and made for non-technical climbing, while steel crampons are heavier and stronger for mountaineering. Choose the construction that best fits your technical level.

How We Chose

Our list of the best crampons and microspikes includes a mixture of budget and higher end options. We surveyed the market and read reviews from verified customers on sites like REI and Amazon where important features like weight, size, features, and construction were detailed. In order to narrow the list down to a selection of six products, we also consulted a ski instructor for his recommendations. Here are the crampons that we suggest no matter your activity, from light winter jogs to intense backcountry mountaineering.

With 12 heat-treated stainless steel spikes per foot, the Kahtoola MICROspikes are both discreet and sleek enough to blend right in with both the après-ski crowd and tough mountaineers.

An REI customer advised, “They made hiking up and down snowy and icy hills a piece of cake. I also had poles, [but] it was so comfortable hiking in these.”

Depending on if you’re traveling or lugging your gear up a mountain, you can use the brand’s complimentary tote sack for your crampons.

There are simple and affordable ways to have effective and extra traction in the snow. One of them is the Yaktrax Pro, which slips on easily and features a strap that goes over the top of your boot or shoe.

One Amazon customer said, “They function the way chains would on tires. I found that my grip was immensely improved and there was no slippage either going up snowy hills or down. I intentionally ran downhill and jumped to a stop to see if I would skid on the snow and it was like jumping into Velcro.”

Durability is no problem here — the cleats are made with 1.4-mm stainless steel coils.

There is no shortage of steel spikes on these crampons — 19 steel spikes to be exact — so you can easily conquer snow and ice. The lightweight elastic shell makes them easy to put on, too.

Amazon customers say that they are very secure on their hiking shoes even without the Velcro straps. Other reviewers said the size chart and the fit is accurate, and they fit snugly on your shoes. The product is designed to withstand breaking or tearing at temperatures up to minus 60 F.

If you have traction needs for more intense winter sports, then you will need reliable and sturdy crampons to deliver the grip and bite you want. The Black Diamond Contact is a great choice for ski mountaineering or trekking up slopes with loose footing.

The crampons are made with a rust-resistant stainless steel construction, and includes front and rear dual-density ABS plates, which aid you in keeping clumps of snow from accumulating under your shoes.

Stay clump-free of snow with the Yaktrax ICEtrekkers Diamond Grip Traction System. Users report that these crampons are easy to put on and provide much-needed traction to old, treadless boots.

It’s easy to see why, as the traction system is made of case-hardened steel alloy “beads.” We also like the shoe harness, which features a durable rubber that will prevent slipping and sliding during frigid and icy conditions. Also, the compact design fits easily in your overnight bag, your trunk, or in your snow emergency kit.

If you want a product that is lightweight and won’t weigh you down while you’re on the go, then the one-pound CAMP XLC boot crampons are a great option. Automatic bindings keep the guesswork out of configuring the crampons around your boot.

“The aluminum construction is extremely lightweight and durable," says Ted Mahon, a veteran ski instructor from Aspen Snowmass. “However, they aren’t a burden to bring in your pack and the aluminum points aren’t so sharp that they poke holes in your gear when stowed away. You’ll be happy you have them when the route gets steep and slippery and you need a little more traction.”

The Drum massage gun is quieter and cheaper than a Theragun, yet relieves my muscle soreness just as effectively

As a generally athletic person, I stay consistently active either practicing yoga, running, hiking, or even scuba diving when I can. Because I use different muscles for these activities, I often feel sore or tight, especially after my longer runs. My go-to recovery instrument has always been a foam roller that I'd use on my hamstrings and glutes — and it's been something I always found to work incredibly well.

But after testing out a variety of massage guns at a few marathon conventions in the past, I became curious as to what it would be like to routinely use one for recovery. To satisfy that curiosity, I jumped at an opportunity to test the Drum, a handheld percussive massager. Not only did it allow me to quickly rehab any muscle soreness I had after working out or running but it also let me transition away from exclusively using my foam roller for self-myofascial relief.

The Drum entirely changed the way I rest, recover, and rehab, and if you're looking to feel better faster after working out, this is exactly what you need. Here's why.

The basics

All massage guns are designed to provide a percussive treatment focused on combating Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, a primary cause of discomfort and injury during and after exercise. Percussive treatment is a type of massage that delivers rapid bursts of pressure into the body's muscle tissue as the massage gun's head oscillates back and forth.

This allows the device to provide direct relief by improving circulation, creating an increased range of motion, and allowing for relief of sore muscles as well as lactic acid release.

Not only does the Drum succeed in doing all of this, but it does so while staying ultra-quiet. Thanks to a brushless motor, it truly lets you wind down with just your thoughts or easily hear music on your headphones or through a speaker after working out.

Specs

Drum

The Drum comes standard with six interchangeable heads that all fit into an included carrying case. The pneumatic head is an air-filled attachment used for softer tissue and sensitive areas, the ball head is a soft, rounded attachment recommended for the back of the neck and feet, and the flat head is a circular shape used for denser areas like the back, thigh or chest.

The others included are a bullet head that's narrow and used for deep muscle tissue like the quads and glutes, while the spinal head is shaped like a fork and used for difficult-to-reach spots like the back of the neck and back.

Included in the kit is a rechargeable lithium battery that provides three hours of usage and recharges with the provided 24-volt adapter. Depending on the degree of recovery needed, there are four different speed levels: 1300, 1800, 2500, and 3300 percussions per minute. A special feature of the Drum is that it was created with an adaptive pressure system that adapts as you apply pressure to create an optimal force between the massage gun and your body.

Setting up the Drum

Getting the Drum set up was an easy process and the gun even came with a 50% charged inside the carry case, making it ready for use immediately. The instruction manual contained a few short pages of information that included how to use the Drum and a diagram illustrating each of its features.

Right after unboxing it, I was able to choose one of the heads, attach it to the massage gun, and turn on the power switch on the bottom of the arm. To adjust the speeds, there's an additional button on the back of the head.

What it's like to use

After long runs, I normally feel tight in my hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors and my go-to form of self-myofascial release is foam rolling, a method of literally rolling tender areas of muscle tissue with a soft cylindrical bar.

Lately, I've been doing more vinyasa yoga and I find that my calves and hamstrings still ache in the morning, even after rolling. I found that on days when I used the Drum with the bullet head attached on those areas, it eased the aches almost immediately.

I also sit at a desk for several hours every day and find that my neck and shoulders will be tight most days of the week from the constant seated posture. After using the Drum with the spinal head attachment for two weeks, I've experienced less tightness and soreness in those areas. The quietness of the instrument also allows me to read or look through emails while holding the massager in my hand. I have slim and short arms, so the Drum having a noticeably longer grip than the guns from either Hypervolt or Theragun makes reaching areas like my neck and back far easier.

Its hardcover carrying case has a sturdy handle, so I always felt comfortable storing it in my closet knowing that it can withstand jostles or even a light fall and it won't break the Drum gun inside. It is slightly heavy, so traveling with the case inside a carry on or checked luggage would be okay as long as you don't overpack it and weigh down your luggage.

Should you buy it?

Drum

With the current state of the pandemic, having a personal percussion massager is a safe alternative to going into a physical or massage therapist's office and having close contact with others. The Drum allows you to have self-myofascial release on a variety of your muscles through its six, diverse head attachments.

What are your alternatives?

There are plenty of massage guns both more expensive and at the same price point. Here a few options:

  • Theragun PRO ($599): Therabody's fourth-generation flagship massage gun, the Theragun PRO, is one of the finest percussive massagers on the market — but also comes with the kind of price tag you'd expect for such a premium product. The PRO features a variety of customizable speed settings, a companion app that allows for deeper fine-tuning, and up to 60 pounds of no stall force, as well as a varied selection of included massage heads. It's a professional-grade massage gun that's not just reserved for a physical therapist's office.

  • Theragun Mini ($199): Though the general consensus may be that Theragun only makes premium massage guns, that's not entirely the case. Released in 2020, the Theragun Mini represented the brand's first foray into entry-level territory and became the first Theragun massage gun to feature a different style and design to its predecessors. Shaped more like a spade (like the card suit), the Mini is a small, handheld massager that's great for those on-the-go or anyone in the market for their first massage gun. The fact it's just $199 means its suitable for a wider range of users (and budgets). This is one of our favorite massage guns we've ever tested.

  • Hypervolt ($299): For $100 more than the Drum Gun, Hypervolt Theragun offers three speed settings, from 30Hz, 40Hz, and 53Hz. The Bluetooth connectivity allows you to tap into a 3-level patented pressure sensor. If you need to travel with the massager, the 3-pound Theragun is also TSA-approved.

  • TimTam Power Massager ($199.99): If you don't need as much diversity in the head attachments, then the TimTam is the same price point as the Drum gun and comes with one head attachment. It has a 90-degree massage angle and also comes with a carrying case. Unlike the Drum gun, you have to buy additional attachments separately and it only delivers a maximum of 2,000 percussions per minute.

The bottom line

The Drum does a great job of loosening my muscles before I work out and then easing muscle pain or soreness after. The price point of $199 is a great deal for anyone who works out constantly and needs a reliable source of relieving pain through percussion massage.

For me, it was worth the investment to be able to travel with the Drum gun and have multiple head attachment options to use on my various muscle groups. Although the carry case is fairly heavy when you have all of the attachments inside, it fits comfortably in my carry on and kept the Drum gun well protected.

After using the Drum gun for several weeks, there was no sign of wear and tear on the device or chafing on the grip. The power switch and the button that regulates the speed settings are easy to use and showed no sign of wear. The quality of the massage gun is high and appears that it will remain in good condition after several months of regular use.

Pros: The Drum gun can get up to 3,300 percussions per minute; four speed settings; six head attachments; comes with a hardcover carry case

Cons: The carry case fully loaded with all of the attachments can be slightly heavy
